Skills gaps are perceived in all of the screen industries:

  • film: 31% of employers perceive skills gaps, 61% don’t and 8% don’t know
  • high-end TV: 39% of employers perceive skills gaps, 51% don’t and 10% don’t know
  • unscripted TV: 38% of employers perceive skills gaps, 59% don’t and 4% don’t know
  • children’s TV: 23% of employers perceive skills gaps, 59% don’t and 18% don’t know
  • animation: 48% of employers perceive skills gaps and 52% don’t
  • VFX: 42% of employers perceive skills gaps, 50% don’t and 8% don’t know
  • games: 37% of employers perceive skills gaps, 61% don’t and 3% don’t know

Examples of jobs affected by skills gaps
The following jobs are among the roles affected by skills gaps:

  • high-end TV: location manager
  • children’s TV: accountant
  • animation: 2d animator
  • games: programmer
  • unscripted TV: director
  • film: accountant
  • VFX: CG supervisor

Scotland is perceived to be the location with most noticeable recruitment difficulties (16%).

Perceived reasons for skills gaps
Employers perceive the following reasons for skills gaps:

  • recruits are new to the role (65%)
  • employee’s training is not complete (60%)
  • new technology (25%)
  • new products and services (19%)
  • new working practices (12%)
