How diverse are the screen industries?
The screen industries are on average less diverse than the total UK workforce:

  • 62% of the screen workforce is male, versus 53% of the total UK workforce
  • 20% of the screen workforce is 50 years old or over, versus 31% of the total UK workforce
  • 57% of the screen workforce is under 40 years old, versus 46% of the total UK workforce
  • 90% of the screen workforce is white, versus 88% of the total UK workforce
  • 10% of the screen workforce has a disability, versus 14% of the total UK workforce
  • 6% of the screen workforce comes from EU27 countries, versus 7% of the total UK workforce
  • 6% of the screen workforce is from overseas, versus 4% of the total UK workforce

Are employers aware of diversity challenges?
More than half of surveyed employers say the workforce does not reflect the diversity of the UK population: 51% are aware of diversity challenges, 38% are not and 10% don’t know.

Many respondents (61%) believe diversity will improve in the next three years.

What employers say leads to lack of diversity
Employers mention the following causes of a lack of diversity:

  • too few applications from under-represented groups (65%)
  • failure to advertise jobs more broadly (38%)
  • recruitment practice is informal, eg word of mouth (36%)

Ways industry says it is tackling lack of diversity
Industry is tackling diversity challenges in the following ways:

  • offering flexible work arrangements (73%)
  • ensuring equal pay (68%)
  • promoting diversity across their organisation (66%)
